A Computer Addiction, or Sickness…
I’m going to start right off by saying that this isn’t going where you probably think it is. This isn’t a proclamation about my computer geekiness and that my whatsit is better than your thingamajig, or vice versa — I’ve decided that I must be addicted to electromagnetic radiation.
I now have a third computer in my office at work. The first one I acquired is an PIII 800mHz laptop with a docking station and a 17-inch monitor, plus mouse, keyboard, and the rest. The second computer is behind me, slightly to my right. It is a slow one, a PII, probably around 350mHz. The usual monitor, keyboard, etc. And last, but not least, is the new one, sitting behind me to the left. It’s a PIII 666mHz or so.
It was not a pleasant feeling I felt when I looked around my paper-strewn office today and discovered that I was in the direct path of three computer monitors, all glaring some form of Microsoft Windows or another right at me. It won’t be long now before the Scandinavian Institute of Electrotoxicology (OK, so I made that up!) releases a report stating that my health and well-being are in jeopardy due to toxic levels of radiation exposure. I guess I can count my blessings that I’ve already had all the kids I’m going to have, and I don’t have to worry about becoming sterile!
I then performed a quick count and realized that there are seven computers, two printers, two fax machines, and 18 fluorescent lights — all within 20 feet of me. On and running. Buzzing and humming in the way that electronic stuff buzzes and hums these days. Not only that, but this is supposedly some ex-NASA building (or some other top secret, could-tell-you-but-have-to-kill-you-first kind of government agency) and who knows what sort of weird things they have installed in the walls to prevent eavesdropping…
And at home? Well, that’s a whole new story! I do a lot of development, production work, and other geeky stuff there, so I have five to six computers humming all day, every day. That doesn’t include the three monitors, two printers, two hubs, and 500+ feet of network cabling surrounding me with a web of electronic signals. And when my friends come over to play computer games? (Empire Earth and StarCraft totally rock, dude!) That means firing up two or three more computers!
I even carry two cellular phones with me everywhere. I’ll present the caveat that one cell phone is provided by my work, the other is my own — so I’m not a total nut job that just carries two phones for the heck of it. My reasonable-sounding justification is that I am guaranteed reception almost anywhere because the two different manufacturer’s phones are using two different cell phone providers. It seems even more reasonable based on recent experience during a business trip to Florida; one phone received a full signal, the other received no signal at all.
But maybe there’s more to it than that. Is my fascination with computers and electronics the result of some gland within my body being stimulated by external forces, or do I just love pushing buttons, twiddling knobs, making things beep, and watching things fly around the screen? Am I feeling warmer when I sit directly within the triad of monitors at work because I’m just getting closer to my office window (with a breathtaking view of the parking lot), or is it because I’m being microwaved?
Well, at least I enjoy what I do and I get paid well for it. Now the only worry I have is whether the headaches I’m getting more frequently are from increased stress, failing eyesight, or a giant tumor growing in my head caused by this jungle of electronics surrounding me.
if i am hungry all the time and i have stopped doing… and i try to eat and my body will not consume the food what is my proble?
