My Secret Activity, Continued…

The "Intro to Geocaching" Series:
  1. I’ve Got a Secret…
  2. My Secret Activity, Continued…
  3. More Clues to my Secret…

The clues continue:

  • As of today, I’ve done it 15 times, twice yesterday;
  • Until I did it and explained it to others, no one I know had ever heard of it, let alone done it before;
  • The first time I did it was on August 10 and it has consumed a lot of my spare time, one of the primary causes of the recent gaps between “articles” on richard’s ramblings, not due to other specific legal issues or criminal prosecutions as one initially may be led to believe;
  • I bruised my back yesterday doing it;
  • My three-year-old son asks me every day if we can do it;
  • Much of the time, the activity occurs in public parks, sometimes with the knowledge, permission, and encouragement of local park rangers, othertimes not;
  • It is legal to participate in the activity under most conditions, but “encouraging” others to do it in certain areas of certain states requires a permit, and off-limits areas exist in other states where the activity is banned altogether;
  • The original form of the activity is considered illegal within parks managed by the National Park Service, but a variant created some time ago in response to the environmental concerns voiced by the NPS is legal, as long as it conforms to local park rules;
  • The first time it was ever done was in celebration of an executive order of the Clinton administration;
  • I have five “travelers” in my possession that are related to this “sport” that I plan on “re-releasing” this weekend;
  • Some “travelers” have racked up thousands of miles, one of which I haven’t seen yet has gone almost 9,000 miles since its “release” on November 25, 2001, and another that I’ve already “captured” and “re-released” has already gone 2,609 miles since last October;
  • This activity is so fun and addicting that I’m actively collecting data for a new blog that I’m creating, its almost daily entries are another reason for the increased gaps between publications here.

Hey, there’s only so much time for writing blogs every day!
