Welcome to Ringling Bros…
Kim’s really big birthday was last week. Total surprise party! She had no clue that I had invited somewhere around 30 people to show up, on a weekday night, no less! The Yahoo calendar and events feature works great on organizing parties like this; my first experience with it was a shindig hosted by either Brenden or Monica, can’t remember which or for what. To give you an idea as to the timing of the event, I’ve included an edited copy of the email I sent out earlier that day to everyone who didn’t decline.
“So far, everything seems to be running smoothly, although that could drastically change at any second! I’m lucky in that Kim has a confirmed notary signing at 6:00 in Campbell. According to MapQuest it’s about 13 minutes away which means she’ll leave somewhere around 5:40 p.m., only 10 minutes behind my original schedule! My only worry is that the appointment will be canceled, and I’ll have to resort to Plan B. The really important thing is that everybody park behind the house, unless either you or your car are regularly seen in the neighborhood on a daily basis. I will mark the general area to park. The all-clear will be called by the opening of the back gate of our property. Until then, if you arrive early please keep the noise levels down. Dinner will be provided.”
I couldn’t have lucked out more that she ended up with a notary signing at the exact time I needed her to be gone! There was no Plan B! Party started at six, and the signing started at six. Right on schedule, as predicted, a few seconds after 5:39 p.m. she left for the appointment. I waited a couple of minutes for her to be really gone, and then at 5:42 the whirlwind began: dusting, vacuuming, glass cleaning, barbeque starting, bathroom cleaning, potato washing, mushroom sauteing. Within minutes people started arriving through the back gate and I doled out assignments left and right. Those who made the obligatory mistake of asking if they could help were given tasks to perform whether they like them or not. “Can I help?” “Make salad”, I said. “Get everyone a drink”, to another. “Put ‘em outside”, I said to a third who had asked where to put the chairs. I didn’t have time to pussyfoot around, to mingle, or even to introduce them to each other. They were on their own.
At 6:23 p.m., just 41 minutes after the insanity began, we were ready, the house fully transformed, the huge variety of food presented in an vast assortment of dishes and bowls, the grease fire extinguished! The six large tri-tips still had to finish their job cooking, but everything else was complete. Only 41 minutes!
About half an hour later, she walked in the front door, the look of surprise and shock on her face worth the incredible effort. Later she said that she didn’t suspect that I’d have people over while she was at the signing because she said that there just wasn’t enough time to prepare. Plus, it was a weekday and that no one would have been able to come.
“Ha!”, I say! I enjoy a challenge!
