Armageddon Day…

Squeezing my lunch between my noon-time appointment and the time I had to pick up my daughter after school, I found myself munching on a $7.98 lunch at Subway around the corner from my house. As I scarfed it down, I caught myself, chastising my appetite with the age-old expression that I was eating it like there was no tomorrow.

Then the thought came to me: What if there really was no tomorrow? How would I spend my last moments?

I’m not talking about a local event such as a nuclear explosion that you could escape from if you had enough time or a fast car. Nor was I thinking of some worldwide plague. We’re talking something cataclysmic — the Earth rent asunder by a planetoid meteor, or somesuch.

To me, sequestering the family and any friends who want to join us up to the summit of the nearby Bald Mountain with lots of supplies, beach chairs, and blankets for a final evening of fun, food, and a breathtaking view over the entire Bay Area might not be a bad way to go.

“Inconstant Moon” by Larry Niven. Good story.
