Rank and File…

I picked a random set of websites to check the Google Toolbar’s ranking of popularity. Essentially, the ranking is a number from 1 to 10 that Google assigns to any particular website. Most are zero, because most websites are lame, unpopular, and worthless.

I’m curious as to how my sites rank compared to major websites.

Here’s a list of the ones I checked, in chronological order: eBay (8), Amazon (0 — not a typo), Barnes and Noble (8), Best Buy (9), Wired (9), NASDAQ (8), Home Depot (0 — I think it relates to the site’s architecture), Wal-Mart (7), Whitehouse.gov (10), Whitehouse.com (6 — yes, the sex site), sex.com (5), Dell (8), 3M (8), Garmin (7), Magellan (7), BMW (7), VW (7), Neopets (7), Arm & Hammer (5), AltaVista (10), Yahoo (9), Google (10 — surprise!), Staples (9), Gateway (8), Cooking.com (3), Travelocity (8), Expedia (5), FedEx (8), UPS (8), US Postal Service (8), California Overnight (4), CNN (9), Charles Schwab (7), Disney (9), Geocaching (7), royal.gov.uk (8), addamsfamily.com (5), osmond.com (6 — yes, THE Osmonds), Brother (3), Canon (9), Olympus (7), Sony (8), Kyocera (7), Saturn (6), GM (7), CA Lottery (7), Linksys (8), Safeway (7), and Albertsons (6).

Now my websites: family site (5), Richard’s Ramblings (5), GeoROCKS! (4), notary page (4).

Funny to think that my family website and my ramblings are both as popular as sex.com, Expedia, the unofficial Addams Family website, and Arm & Hammer. And more popular than cooking.com and Brother?!

As an afterthought, I checked stephanieadams.com (3) and goddessy.com (5) and immediately lost faith in the Google ranking system!
