Vacation 2004: The Rest…
The last half-week of the vacation was filled with hanging out by the pool, multiple visits to the nearby Blue Ridge Pottery studios, and shopping at the local merchants and the Dayton Farmers’ Market. The final full day consisted of a trip back to the DC area to visit Arlington National Cemetery and the FDR memorial, which was quite possibly the best attraction in all of downtown Washington DC. Movies included the Avengers (a stupid movie), Mission: Impossible II (which I’d already seen), and Hulk (a bit of a disappointment).
If we visit these states again, the highlights that we missed this time that we would be sure to hit next time would include Ford’s Theatre, the zoo, the National Portrait Gallery (currently under renovation), the new Air and Space Museum annex, closer looks at the White House and Pentagon, Mount Vernon, and a few of the gravesites we missed within Arlington.
All in all, a trip well worth the price, especially considering the entire two-week trip was on a tight but reasonable budget. Our only costs were car rental (~$400), food (~$500), and souvenirs and gifts (~$350). Less than $90 a day!
