The Millionth Dollar!

In the same week that a large six-month-old accounting error finally sneaks up on me and bites me in the ášš, causing me to use overdraft protection on two vital checks — the incredibly tight cash flow problem brought on in the first place by a very slow-paying client who delayed a very important check three times the size of the average Peruvian’s annual income — I achieved another life goal and was paid my millionth dollar.

I’d actually earned dollar #1,000,000 back on June 23, 2004, but it took 78 days for that dollar to arrive by FedEx in the form of a check. The teller at the local Wells Fargo branch was curiously amused when I asked him to deposit the entire check, minus one dollar to be saved for posterity. After I explained, he and his nearby coworker had fun rummaging through the cash drawer looking for the best condition bill to mark the occasion. I’m not sure the other guy really got the point; he kept trying to get me to take home a silver dollar instead. Not exactly the same.

At this point, considering our current situation, it’s a bit anticlimactic. Technically, I’ve completed another life goal by receiving that 1,000,000th buck, but I’m left feeling a bit unsatisfied.

Was the goal to earn, or receive, the dollar?

OK. Your list only said earn, but has the date of receive. (Yes, this is why QA’ers have so few friends. Maybe I should switch to rugby.)

Nah, QA is just fine! True, but the goal wouldn’t seem complete until I actually received the dollar. The earn date is still important, but without the receiving of the millionth bill, I’d have nothing to keep for posterity. Basically, I narrowed down the moment that I earned the dollar and identified that I had to wait for a particular invoice to be paid in order to receive THE dollar. That’s the main reason I was so irritated that I didn’t have just one more notary appointment before we headed off to Virginia; I was at $999,968 and I would have let the next appointment be just $32, so I could get the dollar at the exact moment. I waited until the last minute before typing in the invoice that made Network Inference the payer of my millionth in hopes of getting one last appt. Shame they had to pay me so darn late! - RDL
