The Future of EastEnders…

I stumbled on to the official BBC EastEnders website yesterday in an effort to confirm my suspicions that Louise Jameson, who plays matriarch Rosa Di Marco, was the same Louise Jameson that played Doctor Who’s Leela, an uncivilized savage companion for Tom Baker’s portrayal of the fourth Doctor. Leela was a sort of Eliza Doolittle, and the Doctor a timeless Professor Higgins.

Anyway, the next five years holds a lot in store for us Yanks who are far behind. Revealing the following does little to spoil any surprises since they are listed in no particular order and, the way soap operas function, there are so many twists and turns that even knowing about them does little to soften the impact. The following applies only to characters currently in the series (KTEH is now showing episodes that aired in early 2000 from Series 17).

Upcoming deaths include Steve, Lisa, Jamie, Roy, Barry, and Mark. At some point Lisa marries Mark, Natalie leaves Barry, Steve and Mel marry, Peggy leaves Frank, Jamie proposes to Sonia, Janine goes after Barry, Sonia marries Martin, Irene leaves Terry, Janine turns tricks, Jeff proposes to Pauline, Janine marries Barry, and Ian marries the nanny.

Can’t wait!

Sounds like marriage isn’t a good move: Steve and Mel marry - Steve dies Lisa marries Mark - both die Natalie leaves Barry, Janine goes after Barry, Janine turns tricks, Janine marries Barry - Barry dies Jamie proposes to Sonia, Sonia marries Martin - Jamie dies (heartbreak?)

And you missed the big one: One of the long lost original characters returns (a “Dirty” little spoiler if ever there was one…)

Yeah, I heard that Den was coming back! I only listed people who I know my wife has heard of; mentioning Den at the time would be (and still is) irrelevant to her. Looking forward to his re-debut, though! - RDL

    WOW!

Just went through the whole four-episode “Kat is Zoe’s mother” reveal. Had us completely riveted to our couch — thankfully Survivor, CSI, and ER were all reruns tonight!

Richard — I so agree! I couldn’t wait to see the next episode. Kat’s discussions with Lynn and Zoey about what happened and why nobody knew were some of the most powerful television I’ve ever seen. I didn’t think that the actress who played Kat (though I liked her — especially with Dr. Anthony while they were together) could act particularly well before this, but I was floored. They did some real research on child molestation and incest and they handled it sensitively but not with kid gloves. Why isn’t Eastenders on the schedule of KTEH though — I did a “search by title” on my digital cable box and I couldn’t find it! When is it coming back?

Funny, have not written anything about Eastenders in ages, and I just posted a list of upcoming Eastender stuff a minute or so before I read your comment. Good timing! I’m not aware of a gap, although I’ll check when I get home. We ARE near the end of the 19th season on KTEH, and the 20th is not listed on the worldwide BBC distribution list that I have (not that my list is all-encompassing), so perhaps we won’t get it for some time :-(

We haven’t even met Stacey, Bradley, Tanya, Sean, or Max yet. There are not many EastEnders residents around today that were living in the Square in May of 2002 — which is what we’re watching now. You only have Ian Beale; Dot and Jim Branning; Peggy, Phil, and Billy Mitchell; Charlie Slater; Mo Harris; Patrick Trueman; Pat Evans; Garry Hobbs; and Terrence and Wellard, of course.

Looking forward to your six-year-later perspective.
