Harry Potter and the Horcrux…
It seems to me that Harry Potter has already had in his possession the Horcrux that he and Dumbledore sought during Year Six. The parchment wedged into the substitute locket that they retrieved while on their excursion contained the note, “To the Dark Lord. I know I will be dead long before you read this… R.A.B.” The rest of the text is irrelevant, but the addressing of the note to the Dark Lord indicates that most likely a Death Eater was the one to steal the real locket since it is almost always only Death Eaters who refer to Voldemort as the Dark Lord.
Regulus, Sirius Black’s brother, was a member of the Death Eaters who died around the time of Harry Potter’s birth. According to Sirius, “he was murdered by Voldemort. Or on Voldemort’s orders, more likely… From what I found out after he died, he got in so far, than panicked about what we was being asked to do and tried to back out. Well, you don’t just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It’s a lifetime of service or death.”
We know that the Death Eater who stole the real Horcrux was backing out of service to Voldemort, and we know that person had the initials R.A.B. — as also may have Regulus “unknown middle name” Black. We also know that among the objects that George, Harry, and Sirius found when cleaning out the glass cabinets in the drawing room of Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place was “a heavy locket that none of them could open”…

Regulus’s middle name is Alfred; after his uncle. Other than that I think you’ve solved it.
Actually, Regulus’ uncle was “Alphard”, and there’s also an “Arcturus” in the family tree after whom he may have inherited the middle name. New information has surfaced to further substantiate that R.A.B. is, in fact, Regulus A. Black:
In the Dutch translation of the novel, Regulus Black is called Regulus Zwarts and the initials in the locket are R.A.Z. In the Norwegian edition, Regulus Black is referred to as Regulus Svaart, and the initials R.A.S. are in the locket, while in the Finnish translation, Regulus Black is named Regulus Musta, and the locket initials are R.A.M.

Foreign translations hadn’t occurred to me before. I suppose, if you’re doing it right, it could really take some effort to make sure all the little bits, like initials in a signature or a key choice of words, are correct in the various editions.
if it was the locket they had found then you know it was regulus! regulus was killed on his orders because he was going against voldermort -thanks for helpoing out my best friend is gonna be pleased
I thought of this as well, but i had a relapse when i thought of mudungus, or what ever his name was when he was found in hogsmeade with a bunch of silver and possessions from the Black House. This scared me to think of because what if Mudungus now has the locket? Or did i miss something, did harry keep the locket when he found it? Ah, i have to read the book again!
