My Number One iTunes Album…

I came up with an interesting best-of list today while importing a few dozen of my remaining albums into iTunes (still have lots more to go!!)

I looked at the top-rated songs in my iTunes library (about 10% of my entire library) and sorted the results by album title. Looking only at albums performed by a single artist and excluding remix-only albums, I then sorted the albums in order of number of songs from that album to make it to my top-rated list. Tie-breakers were chosen based on the total number of times the songs had been played.

The artists and albums:

  1. The Beatles / Abbey Road
  2. The Beatles / Revolver
  3. Erasure / Crackers International
  4. Cyndi Lauper / She’s So Unusual
  5. The Beatles / Hey Jude
  6. Men at Work / Brazil
  7. The Beatles / Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
  8. A*Teens / The Abba Generation
  9. The Beatles / Rubber Soul
  10. Cyndi Lauper / True Colors
  11. The B-52’s / Cosmic Thing

When sorting all songs by the number of times played, the country music genre doesn’t show up until #129, beaten out by ska popping in at #121 and Caribbean folk music at #33. Oddly, the first Beatles song to show up is Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, and it cames in at only #38. The first Erasure song on the same list is in 58th place. Both of those songs are beaten out by multiple tunes from Hilary Duff, Baha Men, and Jessica Simpson — Go figure!

Also popular, but not making the list (because of the method of narrowing down results) were Moulin Rouge (Top-Rated Soundtrack) and Disney Mania (Top-Rated Multiple-Artist Album). The shortest song on the entire list lasts only 27 seconds, the longest is over nine minutes long.

Are you insinuating that Country music is not worthy of top lists? Or is this just the list that you have from your music downloads…and because you don’t care for country music then you don’t have a large selection of music to analyze. I am probably way off base in understanding your blog because I’m not a techy but it seems to me the list is compiled by what you have in your own personal library of music.

“…but it seems to me the list is compiled by what you have in your own personal library of music.”

Why, whatever gave you that idea? Could it be… “…while importing a few dozen of my remaining albums”? or “I looked at the top-rated songs in my iTunes library“? or perhaps “…to make it to my top-rated list.”?

My music collection, including some of the tunes listed in my favorites, is made up from artists ranging from Aaron Carter, Aaron Tippin, Ace of Base, and Aqua to Whitney Houston, Wynonna, Yaz, and Yello. How much more expanded can my collection get?!
