Breakfast in Yarmouth, Cape Cod…
Cape Point Hotel
The Breakfast Cafe, not far from the unobtrusive hotel lobby, is surprisingly small but serves up good, competitive-quality, inexpensive food. For only $29, we fed a family of four with a hearty breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, hot chocolates, and juices. Business was slow mid-morning during the week, so service was quick and responsive. Our waitress could have been a bit friendlier, but she was reasonably attentive. My favorite here was the cranberry-walnut pancakes, with lots of nuts and plenty of fruit inside to satisfy my craving — although the reason chefs on the cape never seem to pile additional cranberries or a cranberry compote on top of the stack completely eludes me. The Cape Point Hotel’s Breakfast Cafe is a hidden bargain.

Bagels & Beyond
We only stopped here on a whim, and I’m glad we did. The franchise offers plenty of breakfast burritos, and sandwiches on bagels and croissants, and the bagels are quite fresh. They overpile cream cheese on bagels but, if that’s a fault, just about every other bagel shop I’ve ever been in does the same. My favorite? Cranberry, of course! I like subtle comedy in establishments, and this Bagels & Beyond portrays it in their street signage; several months ago, in response to the incident at a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts where two employees were arrested for spitting and urinating in the coffee they sold to police officers, Bagels & Beyond posted “Nothing but cream/sugar in our coffee” on their sign! It is no wonder that several officers are regulars here! Nice place to stop for a light, inexpensive meal.

Pancake Man
If I were to give out an award for the Best Blueberry Pancakes Just About Anywhere, I’d hand it over to the Pancake Man. Mounds of luscious, little Maine blueberries are griddled inside the flapjacks, with a healthy portion piled on top, too. Sure, the Pancake Man is also well known for their buttermilk, apple cinnamon, chocolate chip, banana walnut, and sweet potato pancakes — but it’s midnight as I’m writing this, I’m at least 3000 miles away from the restaurant, and I have a craving for their blueberry pancakes ($6.29) that will not go away! The banana nut bread French toast ($6.49) was very good, but a bit too cake-like as it crumbled quite easily. On a subsequent day, I also had the Cran-Nut pancakes ($6.19) in order to have a comparison to the Cape Point Hotel, and I preferred the Pancake Man’s; the pancakes tasted better and had a more pleasant texture and consistency. They also had more and fresher dried cranberries, and fewer nuts. The only unusual negative was that our son didn’t like the whipped cream that was served on his chocolate chip pancakes ($6.99); seemed OK to the rest of us who sampled it, but maybe he just woke up a bit cantankerous. The Pancake Man is open to serve lunch until 2pm most of the year, and reopens for dinner at 5pm starting in late June, but this restaurant definitely specializes in breakfast. Expect long lines in the morning, none at other hours. Not the cheapest breakfast (around $38 for four) but well worth the price and wait.

Keltic Kitchen
Hands down, our breakfast here was the best meal we had on the Cape, and quite possibly one of the best breakfasts I have had in decades. The Keltic Kitchen serves up one of the most authentic traditional Irish breakfasts on this side of the Atlantic. My Keltic Fry ($7.50) selection included two poached eggs, two imported Galtee rashers, two sausages, imported Galtee black and white pudding, home fries, and brown bread. A rasher, for the uninitiated, is just Irish bacon (similar to Canadian bacon). And if you haven’t heard of black and white pudding, it is two kinds of sausages — the “white” prepared the “normal” way with chunks of pork, pork fat, and spices, while the “black” version is also mixed with curdled and boiled pig blood. Sounds gross, but it is quite tasty! I am still surprised that it was imported; I hadn’t known that US customs had lifted the ban on importing blood sausage, and the sausages just tasted so fresh and homemade. The home fries outclassed any home fries we’ve ever eaten, the Portuguese sweet bread French toast ($6.25) scored top marks with the kids, and the tasty American-style bacon was cooked crisp to perfection. The McCann’s (I peeked at the label from the kitchen!) Irish sausages were also top notch, the jeweled crown on the meal. The only negative was that I wasn’t too thrilled with their homemade Irish brown bread. I make my own at home a few times a year, and Keltic Kitchen’s didn’t seem to stack up in terms of flavor or texture.

Ann & Fran’s Kitchen
The relatively inexpensive diner has attentive and friendly waitresses that serve up quality food. Like most restaurants in the area, eggs served sunnyside up are not on the menu due to health hazard concerns, but the chefs in this tiny restaurant prepared over-medium-style to perfection. Good typical bacon, sausage, pancakes, and french toast fare. It was the atmosphere that made Ann & Fran’s Kitchen memorable; lots of locals frequent the restaurant, giving it that homey feel. And someone in the kitchen has a quirky sense of humor — you may not notice the humorous items scattered throughout the restaurant if you aren’t looking for them, but a few things might tickle your funny bone. My favorite was a doctored Hamburger Helper box that now offered Piping Plover Helper! There were definitely better, albeit more expensive, breakfast choices nearby, but this kitchen offers pretty good food at a good price.
