Computer Name Themes

Many moons ago, we had up to thirteen computers on our home network, ranging from specific application and web servers to a variety of desktops and laptops. Nowadays (and it is so rare for me to say “nowadays”), that number has dropped significantly to (*looking around my home*) somewhere around six.

Every time I get a new computer or replace the operating system of an older computer, I am plagued with the eternal dilemma of what to name the computer. Usually I just pick whatever comes to mind at the time: “scrapper” (my wife scrapbooks), “mars” (had an argument with my daughter that day, so the God of War was brought to the forefront of my imagination), or the ever-boring choices of “dell-desktop” or “richard-pc” (my current host name).

So, I decided to sit down and catalog some fun alternatives for next time (not all-inclusive):

  • Battlestar Galactica: adama, apollo, baltar, boomer, crashdown (perhaps not the best name for a computer), gaius, helo, husker, kira, racetrack, starbuck, thrace
  • StarCraft: adun, aldaris, arcturus, artanis, daggoth, duke, fenix, kerrigan, mengsk, overmind, protoss, raynor, tassadar, zeratul, zerg
  • World of Warcraft: andorhal, anvilmar, azshara, blackrock, cenarius, crushridge, durotan, duskwood, elune, exodar, feathermoon, ghostlands, gnomeregan, gurubashi, hyjal, ironforge, kargath, stormwind, tanaris, uldaman, westfall
  • X-Men: banshee, beast, cannonball, colossus, cyclops, iceman, juggernaut, magma, magneto, mirage, mystique, nightcrawler, phoenix, rogue, shadowcat, storm, thunderbird, wolverine, xavier

Got any fun lists of your own?

@Sean: Ya know, I had been thinking about going through my old email backups to see if I could drudge up that old list…

I know there were originally seven because I remember sending a list of suggestions based on Ancient Wonders, Dwarves, Days*, etc. Just can’t remember what the 7 Zs ended up being past the 4 I listed.

    * Kinda wanted this one just so I could say that Tuesday’s meeting in Thursday has been moved to Monday in Friday.

Actually, the original list contained a lot more than seven Z-words, but a poll among employees helped narrow down the top seven, with a few more contenders waiting in the sidelines for possible expansion. In an unfortunately typical move among those without their finger on the pulse of their employees, the employee-chosen seven were discarded in favor of the whims of someone in management — and a new unrelated set of seven showed up on the wall-plates instead.

[For the uninitiated, the Z list mentioned above was a list of conference room names at now-defunct Zoho Corporation, not to be confused with the Zoho of today.]
