It’s been a while since I’ve poked fun at some of the search terms folks have used to find this website. Why stop now?
Unlike in the past, I have recently started to keep on eye on this site’s Alexa ranking, and have noticed some significant and surprising movement.
While moving from one web hosting provider to another, I came across a server log that showed a list of failed login attempts, detailing seven days of attempted break-ins near the end of this last September. Fortunately, my password is fairly strong, but it could be a lot better.
I wrote a new Perl script last night with which I can automatically look up and (just as importantly) archive a month’s worth of hostnames and whois information for every non-spamming, non-spider visitor that views an unspecified number of web pages here on my ramblings — which, of course, is preserved in a PDF file. I picked a random set of websites to check the Google Toolbar’s ranking of popularity. Essentially, the ranking is a number from 1 to 10 that Google assigns to any particular website. Most are zero, because most websites are lame, unpopular, and worthless.
